Fire Restrictions Set In

By Madelyn Jarrett

LOCKWOOD - A grass fire came dangerously close to Interstate 94 Wednesday afternoon. Fire crews say they're unsure how it started, but they got it quickly under control.

The fire started around 4 p.m. near mile marker three just off the interstate. Lockwood fire officials estimate it only consumed between 3-to-5 acres. A passerby called it in, and along with many others, got out and started trying to put it out. Lockwood fire captain says with the help of Billings, Wordon and BLM they were able to knock the flames down pretty quickly. However crews were on scene until around 9 p.m. mopping up.

This fire is an example of why officials are calling for stage one restrictions across south-central Montana. That means no campfires and no smoking outdoors except within an enclosed vehicle or building. This doesn't include areas within city limits.

You can check with county officials for specific exemptions to the new rules. Anyone found in contempt of the fire restrictions could face a $5,000 fine, and could be on the hook for firefighting costs in the event of a wildfire. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are imposing stage one fire restrictions at midnight Wednesday night.

Also, because of so many wildfires lately, the Red Cross is asking for contributions to help with local disaster relief. To make a donation online, go to our website and click here.
