Dovetail Fire Update

By Nick Lough

COLUMBUS - Firefighters are still on scene near Columbus trying to put the Dove Tail Fire that destroyed several structures.

It started as a structure fire but quickly grew to something much more. A day later all that remains of this house is smoke, ash, and a small section of what used to be the middle of the foundation. "We rolled in with a lot of structure equipment, bigger equipment, we tried to knock as much of it down as we could," said Columbus Fire Chief Rich Cowger.

But that was not the case as the fire quickly spread to nearby trees and eventually burning down two more structures. "It was scary seeing the flames right behind us knowing that its getting close," said resident Shawn Shifley. The flames came so close to some houses that it actually burned right up to the exteriors before firefighters were able to put it out. "It crossed our mind we could lose our house," said Shifley.

But before it could spread to even more homes officials called in air support and through everything they had at it. "Fortunately with interagency we were able to bring all those resources to bear on this fire and get it out before it became a major wildfire," said Stillwater County DES Coordinator Ken Mesch. And a major wildfire is something these residents never want to see in their neighborhood again.
