Day Trips 2 - Custer's Last Stand Reenactment

By Nichole Szemerei

HARDIN - It's the first week of June and you may be itching to get outside. As part of the "Day Trips" series, KULR-8 goes to Hardin for a re-enactment of one of history's most famous battles.

"5,000 people in the stands, its show time, its fun for us as re-enactors to bring history to life," says John Dahl, a Custer Rider and marketing director.

From the top of the show emotions are intense.

"We have a scene at the very beginning where they exchange flags and to me that kind of gives you butterflies every time you see it," says director, Dave Riley.

"You read about it in the history books but this you actually get to see it and feel it so it's a powerful experience," says Dahl.

And along with the deep-rooted history come floozies, who are in it for the fun!

"I like flirting around with the cavalry, and the mountain men, and the Indians, I got 'em all. I'm a natural," says Madaam Die, Diana Robertson. And she says her husband in real life gets jealous, but flag bearer Sgt. Bustard says, "Just a little bit."

The Robertson's have four generations in the reenactment. It is truly a family affair.

"I love this man right here and watching him out there being in the cavalry just brings tears to your eyes because you can see both sides and when the Indian folks come out they're just like family. I mean it's a lot of history."

The Battle of the Little Big Horn took place in 1876 and involved Civil War hero Lt. Col. George Custer.

"He just had an ego to fulfill and he does it every year, same thing all over again," George Robertson laughs.

Although the show is to honor and remember those on both sides who gave their lives so many years ago the cast still likes to have a little fun!

If you can get to a show you can definitely make a day out of it. You can go into Hardin for some native food, visit the museum and see actual artifacts, and then you can continue to the Little Bighorn site and state park where it all occurred.

Reenactments are the last weekend in June. For more information visit www.custerslaststand.org.
