Ski Tips: Terrain Park

By Nick Lough

RED LODGE - Whether it's riding backwards or taking off a huge jump safety should be the primary concern when you are trick skiing.
"We're heading to the terrain park Friday and we've got to walk before we can run so we have a little a little practice box in our learning area and we're going to work our way into bigger and better things Friday," said Red Lodge Mountain's Eliza Kuntz.
Kuntz believes a lot of skiers and snowboarders try to do big trick before they're ready for them. She says the first progression you want to do is hit a box straight on flat skis. She says step two should be to hop on the box and hop off the box.
Another trick skiers do is riding switch, which means riding backwards on skis. Kuntz says riding switch adds a level of difficulty to pulling off tricks. Red Lodge Mountain Mick Thompson believes whenever you're in the terrain park you always want to make sure you remember safety.
"You always want to come through the terrain park and actually ride through for the first time. Take a look at the features. You're going to look at take offs, the actual surfaces of the rails and the boxes, the landings."
