Dumb Laws: Forbidden Movies

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - If you lived in Alabama, would you know it's illegal to chain your alligator to a fire hydrant? Or, if you were in the buckeye state of Ohio, you would break the law if you caught a ride on the roof of a taxi cab? These states aren't alone; Montana has some pretty strange laws too.

The movie rating system is pretty easy to follow we all know PG, PG-13 and R, but a website claims regardless of the rating, certain movies can't be shown in any Montana movie theater. We find out if this is fact or fiction.

Heading to the movie theater to catch a flick on a Friday night is something most people do on occasion but did you know it could be illegal? The website crazylaws.com says in Montana it's against the law to show movies that depict acts of felonious crime. But, just like every other bizarre Montana law we've researched, this one is no longer on the books.

"I've never seen any of them written down in the codes annotated and you may be able to go back to the 1800's and 1900's and found a law book that had these things in there, but they're not anything that would be enforced today," said Yellowstone County Sheriff Department's Ron Wilson.

MSU-Billings history expert Dr. Keith Edgerton believes this law probably originated when Hollywood movies were starting to take off. "Maybe this law was passed when movies first came out and Hollywood was in its infancy and tried to regulate the morality of what they were showing," said Dr. Edgerton.

He says prior to the 1960's, movies were pretty tame compared to today's standard. But he say gangster movies were very popular among young people and if a law that bans felonious crimes was strictly enforced Montanans would not have gotten the opportunity to see those types of movies.
