Dumb Laws: No Speed Dial

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - Did you know it's illegal for a person to push a moose out of a plane in Alaska? Sounds pretty strange, but Alaska isn't alone, Montana also has some pretty weird laws.

City ordinances like leash laws and sign codes are pretty mainstream in most cities, but what about speed dial? Speed dial revolutionized the time it takes for one person to dial another on the phone, but crazylaws.com claims in Billings it's illegal for employees of the city's communications center to program their phones with speed dial.

Law enforcement officials say the statute is no longer on the books and one history expert can't pinpoint why some people thought this was a good idea. "I don't have a clue. I don't know what anybody was thinking when they came up with that. I don't know how old it is. I don't even know how long we've had speed dial," said MSU-Billings' Dr. Keith Edgerton.

The Yellowstone County Sheriff's Department has had the speed dial option on its phones for years. One of the department's officers says the law defies all logic. "I don't have any clue. There has to be a reason they passed all of these laws at some point, but it seems like a waste of time at this point," said Yellowstone County Sheriff's Department's Ron Wilson.

Dr. Keith Edgerton says he's not surprised the law existed he says if you look back at Montana's history strange laws are passed for a variety of reasons and that's probably what happened here. "There might have been some back door loophole to get something like this in. Maybe a good ol' boy network thing to allow this, maybe off of one incident, that's my guess," said Dr. Edgerton.
