Ski Tips: Turning

By Nick Lough

RED LODGE - Knowing how to turn properly and stay in control on skis can separate the people going down the bunny hill from those looking to take on a black diamond.

Carving down a steep slope as a novice skier can be a little overwhelming, but one Red Lodge mountain ski instructor says trusting your edge can mean a world of difference.

"So we were working on pole touches to start your turn and what not, now we've got to work on what's going on down at your feet," said Red Lodge Mountain Ski Instructor Eliza Kuntz. "So we're going to practice getting off our edges and on our edges." Kuntz says skiers need to be comfortable on their edges. What's going to happen when they're not on our edges? She says they're either going to fall over or slide down the hill. "When we take off to start the turn think about rolling your ankles, then hold it there on the edge, and have a good ride," said Kuntz. "You just have to trust those edges and they're sharp and they're metal and they'll hold onto that snow." She gives these tips for skiers struggling with the concept: Widen your stance out a little bit, roll your knees and your ankles up the hill, hang on and enjoy the ride.

Joins us next Thursday for Ski Tips as we transition from novice tips into a more intermediate lesson and learn how to master the moguls.
