What's Up Flag Uniform

By Emily Nantz

BILLINGS - Have you ever noticed that on some military uniforms the American Flag is facing backwards? One viewer noticed and asked What's Up With That? One such uniform is the army military combat uniform. And no it's not a mistake that the American Flag is what could be considered backwards on the right sleeve. The direction of the flag on the sleeve dates back to early military traditions, when the cavalry or infantry carried the American Flag into battle. Captain Greg Olson says, "And when they are doing that it flows in the breeze and that's why the American Flag is reversed on here so it gives the perception when a solider is moving forward that it is flowing in the wind." Captain Olson says he thinks it also implies the American solider is always moving forward in battle. He says, “Always taking the fight to the enemy so we look at the flag as a reminder that we always want to be moving forward in battle." But the permanent addition of the American Flag to their uniform is new. Before the flag was added when a soldier was on a multinational joint deployment and then they would take the flag off their uniform when they returned to their home station. Olson says, "But since October 2005 they recently made a change to the uniform and added the American flag to be worn permanently that's just a subtle reminder to all of us that we are a nation at war and it's very important that we all remember that." As to why the flag is on the right shoulder of the solider. Captain Olson says because in the military the right side is considered a place of honor. Thanks to Jody Olson for that question.
