What's Up NFL Green Dot - 1/18

By Emily Nantz

You might have noticed something a little different if you're a fan of pro football. Some players are sporting a green dot on the back of their helmets. And it's causing folks to ask What's Up With That.
It's a rule that went into effect this football season and it's a small green dot located in the middle back of a quarterback's helmet. But why is it there? Denver Broncos Equipment Manager Chris Valenti says it's there to let the referee know who has a communication device in their helmet. The dot is to make sure there's not more than one person with a communication device on the field at a time. Right now only one person on the field from the offense can have a communication device. The quarterback has one in their helmet so they can get plays from the sidelines. In recent years though there's been more than one player on the field with a communication device as more and more quarterbacks play other positions.
One day there could be one other player on the field with a communication device. Valenti says for a couple of years a proposal's been before the competition committee to allow someone on the defense to have a communication device. But there's debate right now on which player that would be.
