What's Up Pond Goldfish

By Emily Nantz

LAUREL - Three times a year, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks stocks the pond at Lions Park in Laurel with rainbow trout. But there are other fish swimming around that pond the FWP did not put there. At some point someone or several some ones decided they couldn't keep their pet goldfish anymore, but also couldn't bear to kill it. So they decided to put these household fish into the pond at Lions Park. FWP officials say they're not sure how many goldfish are in the pond and so far they seem to get along well with the trout. But there could be problems, first there is only so much space and food in the pond. And officials say moving fish around is something you should not do. Jim Darling the Regional Fishery Manager for South Central Montana says, "Moving fish anywhere can totaling disrupt a system, it's very bad. Years and years of good management can be laid to waste just by one exotic introduction." About ten years ago the pond was dredged to make it a little deeper but that either didn't kill the goldfish or others decided to also "liberate" their pets.
