BILLINGS - They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in a room full of Pulitzer Prizewinning photographs there are no words. The nation's most prized photographs, the Pulitzer Photographs exhibit, are at the Yellowstone Art Museum and will be open to the public Friday.

"This exhibition gives an example of every single Pulitzer Prizewinning photograph awarded since the 1940s," said Yellowstone Art Museum Executive Director Robyn Peterson, "It's been traveling nationwide for a while. Of course new prizes are awarded every year; the show gets a little bigger every year."

For the first time, the 118 photographs are being housed here in the Magic City. "Capture the Moment" is the newest exhibit at the Yellowstone Art Museum. The gallery will be on display until the end of December.

"Almost all cases they are wrenching, emotional impact of some of the images. There are instances that you remember. If you don't remember the specific image, you'll remember the political or current event that they are illustrating," said Peterson.

The gallery comes from the collections of the Newseum, an interactive museum of news based in Washington, D.C. Peterson says the power of photojournalism behind every picture makes time stand still.

"We are visual species, we understand by seeing them. Photojournalism has a way of transcending language barriers and communicating information in a way that no other medium can do," said Peterson.

Peterson says she hopes the images help visitors remember those exact moments in history. "I really hope that the residents of our area will come down, that they will see themselves as part of a large human continuum, and become acquainted with some of the momentous historic occasion of our own collective past."

Tickets are $6 for adults and $12 for a family.
