BILLINGS - People in Billings are helping amputees in Haiti get back on their feet.
Montana Orthotics and Prosthetics is collecting old or unused lower limb prosthetics for Haitians who lost their legs in the January 12 earthquake.
The need is great said Scott Hildebrand, prosthetist at Montana Orthotics and Prosthetics.
He said the limbs collected are sent to Physicians for Peace in Norfolk, Virginia.
They reassemble them and then fit them to people in Haiti.
Hildebrand said he is already sent seven boxes.
"In fact yesterday we had four people come in with prosthetics for donation and it just keeps going and going," said Hildebrand. "It makes you feel good that you can do something like that and they are going to the right place."
Donations can be dropped off at Hildebrand's office located at 3400 1st Avenue North in Billings.
Hildebrand said the program's goal is also to train Haitian medical workers how to care for this new, large population of amputees and how to fit prosthetic limbs.
The program is a partnership through Hanger Orthopedic Group.
