BILLINGS - Several local schools are raising money to help with relief efforts in Haiti using their talents and a friendly rivalry.

The horrific images of suffering and loss in Haiti due to the earthquake have struck a chord with students across the Yellowstone Valley. Eight grade music students at Riverside Middle School in Billings are holding a talent show to raise donations to help with relief efforts.

"We have piano players, singers, dancers, event somebody who wrote a rap for riverside," said Erin Small, choral director at Riverside. The event was originally to raise money for the music department, but after the earthquake in Haiti they flipped it around to benefit both.

"It makes me feel really good because I know I'm doing something to help someone else," said Emma Olsen, eighth grader.

"I feel sorry for them and would like them to have what we have here which is a good life," said Elvis Lone Elk, eighth grader.

The talent show is this Friday, January 22nd at 7 p.m. at Riverside. "There's no cost, just a donation if you would like to contribute," said Small.

"There's always been this rivalry between Laurel and Central so that helped start it and to help Haiti because it's terrible what's been going on there," said Logan Daines, senior class president of Billings Central High School. Laurel and Central High Schools are hooping it up for Haiti; hoping that rivalry will lead to a slam dunk for donations.

They have been collecting money all week leading up to the varsity boy's basketball game Friday night.

"We're going to announce the totals at the beginning of the game and then give all the fans one more chance to donate at third quarter and then announce the totals at the end of the game," said Madison Martin, student body president at Laurel High.

The vice principal of the losing school will have to do a walk of shame across the court in the winning school's colors. Donations from both fundraisers will be given to either the American Red Cross or Help for Haiti.
