Montana Poet Laureate

CROW AGENCY -- Henry Real Bird is an expert at raising bucking horses, but the longtime rancher can also write, rhyme and riddle -- which is why Governor Brian Schweitzer has appointed him to be the state’s new poet laureate.

As the state’s official poet, Real Bird will travel around Montana encouraging appreciation for literature.

"That's what's in store for me," he said. "Go throughout the state and spread poetry and the art of writing."

The native Crow, who “lives on the land where Custer made his Last Stand,” said he often finds inspiration for his work through the scenic surroundings of southeastern Montana.

He even found a bit of beauty before meeting up with KULR-8 during a chilly Thursday afternoon: "As I was coming in [for the interview] I was able to see the wind blow the puddles, blow ripples over the puddles, and that's a beautiful thing to see.”

Having published 12 children’s books, a poetry book, and other literary works, Real Bird should have no problem filling his new assignment.

He is the Treasure State’s third poet laureate and succeeds Greg Pape, whose term expired.
