BILLINGS - Phil Nagel cruised through Billings this week. He is cycling through 48 states in 48 days, "This is the ultimate challenge for me," he said.
His goal is to raise $48,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of his uncle who died from the disease.
"I wanted to do an athletic event to commemorate his life because he was an athlete and he was very ambitious," said Nagel.
Nagel isn't alone out there on the road.
Dozens of people have passed through Billings, putting the pedal to the concrete so to speak to bring awareness to a cause close to their hearts.
Texan Craig Broeder riding 9-thousand miles around the perimeter of the United States in honor of his wife's 20th anniversary of surviving ovarian cancer.
"I am constantly tired," said Broeder in a previous interview.
The backwards biker Curan Wright riding coast to coast to raise awareness for homelessness and HIV/AIDs.
"My son is three years old," he said. "I don't want to die and not know that he's going to have a better place to be."
Off the bicycle, Bill Kathan also hit the road backwards looking forward to helping at risk youth in Oregon. His cross-country backwards walk began in Connecticut.
U.S. Airman Mitchel Fields flipped things back around when he ran 225 miles for the American Red Cross.
"The chance of failure and not being able to make it that's what I like," said Fields.
Sometimes they have a little more horse power beneath them when hitting the road for a cause as several motorcycle groups have rode through Billings for charitable events.
Or sometimes, they are literally maintaining their course on a horse, like Lee the Horse Logger traveling on a horse-drawn house-carriage.
"There's an amazing number of good people out there," said Lee about his travels.
No matter their form or direction these folks are driven to make a difference.
They make us think how there is probably no way we would, or could do that, but we cheer them on and admire the inspirational fuel they run on.
Nagel consumes 9-thousand calories a day on his journey to cycle through 48 states in 48 days.

It is great that Phil is doing this. LLS is finding cures for blood cancers (that also help people with all types of cancer). They also have financial aid and educational and emotional support for patients and families going through the battle. If you or someone you know is fighting a blood cancer, check out www.lls.org. Way to go Phil!
