Women Build Day

By Katie Ussin

BILLINGS - Women from across the Billings area took the day Thursday to pound some nails and put up siding on a home for a deserving family.
It is part of the National Women Build Week, a partnership between Lowe's and Habitat for Humanity.
The home is located in the Billings Heights on Cortez Avenue.
"They might never have done this kind of stuff before so they're learning and there's laughter," said Debra Dusenbury, volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity Mid-Yellowstone Valley.
"We're doing it for somebody who needs the help," said Melissa Welbes, volunteer.
That somebody is single-mom Savanna Miller, who, like all Habitat house recipients, is helping build her new 1056- square-foot home.
"My kids will get their own bedrooms, well the boys will share, but my daughter will get her own room and won't have to share with mom anymore," said Miller.
She said the experience meant a lot to her and she was grateful to all the volunteers.
About 25 ladies volunteered at Miller's Habitat house for the National Women Build event; no construction skills required just the desire to build a better future for a Billings family.
"I'm doing it because it's women that need help and children and I just really enjoy doing it," said Barb Bailly, volunteer.
"I like to get involved in the community and putting back into the community," said Kim Burdick.
There were a few guys helping out on Women Build Day, "I can survive with all of these beautiful ladies just fine," laughed Jay Olsen.
Olsen, a long-time Habitat volunteer, said building houses for others is addictive.
"Once you get Habitat-itus, you got it," he said.
Whether it is National Women Build Day, or just any old day, 96-year-old Margaret Ping, co-founder of the Billings Habitat for Humanity affiliate, said she loves each volunteer.
"It means a lot to me that we've been able to do this well in Billings and we're still going strong," said Ping.
The house should be done by the end of June.
The Habitat for Humanity Mid-Yellowstone Valley will receive a $5-thousand grant from Lowe's for being one of the first 150 Habitat affiliates to sign up for Women Build Day.
The Cody, Wyoming Habitat affiliate held a Women Build day last Saturday.
