Green Heating

BILLINGS - In this week's Spirit of Montana, one Billings company is proving that one man's trash can be another man's treasure.

Though the halls of the former Garfield School aren't as full as they used to be they still need to be heated, and thanks to one company they are.

"We're really thankful," says Dale Orth, with Yellowstone County Boys and Girls Ranch. The Yellowstone County Boys and Girl ranch purchased the building five years ago and struggled when they were hit with a heating cost of $8,000 in one month.

"We wanted to be a community center for non-profits here and offer them low rent, so with that kind of utility prices it was going to be a real challenge," says David Morales, with YCBGR. But that challenge was met, when company leaders from Master Lube agreed to donate their used oil to the organization to be filtered and reused as oil that now heats the building. "Our goal is to support what they are doing," says Bill Simmons, Master Lube Chairman.

With money from a federal grant, officials with the Boys and Girls Ranch purchased a boiler that now converts and filters the oil. Reducing their costs to as low as $300 dollars a month. Those involved in the oil recycling say not only does it make them feel more "green" but they are also able to better help the community.

"I have great faith in the them, whatever we need to do in order to support their mission to help families, I would support that," says Bill Simmons. "We're really thankful that their generosity allows us to do a work that really needs to be done," says Dale Orth.

Bill Simmons with Master Lube says they have a significant amount of used oil that is under utilized. He says he would be happy to be able to donate the used oil to another worthy cause.
