Student Recovers

By Madelyn Jarrett

ROUNDUP - On Friday October 24th number 77 on the Columbus High School football team, Josh Jenson, suited up in his green and white uniform for the last time.

This is his senior year at Columbus High School. But for Josh the game has even more meaning. "Things couldn't have been going better, and like that, they were all gone."

Last year he wasn't able to play the last game of the season. He was recuperating from a bad crash he endured with 4 other friends. "I broke my femur and they put a titanium rod in it and I broke a vertibra in my lower back and shattered my arm."

Josh ended up trapped under the van, and the others came to the rescue. They lifted the vehicle off of him and pulled the teen to safety. Greg Fink was in the accident too, but he escaped without injury. "I'm so glad he's still here, so glad he's okay."

Coming back wasn't easy for Josh. "As much as I wanted to it was really hard coming back this year. I was 2 if not 3 steps behind, and I'm still not where I used to be." He may not be in the same shape he was before the accident, but he says thanks to a lot of support from family and friends he was able to play his final game.

This was his last time suiting up for the football field, because Josh has different plans for college. "I'm planning to major in diesel technology at MSU Northern." And as for this final year with friends and class mates, Greg and Josh are going to apply their attitude from the field to everything they do, knowing just how lucky they are. "Go out and play our hearts out." says Fink.

The accident was on October 6th of last year. Jensen sustained the worst injuries while one girl had a broken collar-bone and another student had to get stitches.

It was so sad to this happen to such a good person. Jensen was and is in my eyes one of the best and hardest working football players i have ever coached. I really hated to see such a bad thing to happen to such a player, he had his whole life ahead of him, and with the progression he made between his sophomore and junior year, i had no doubt in my mind he would have been able to play football at the next level. His heart and determination to become a better football player was tenacious.
