Day of Caring

By Scott Beadle

BILLINGS - On Thursday, it was time again for one of the biggest community service days in the Magic City.

Each year, the United Way of Yellowstone County organizes the Day of Caring. It's a chance for volunteers to take on dozens of different community service projects, benefiting more than 30 local non-profit organizations.

Jennifer Anderson and her volunteer group from the Billings Clinic spent the afternoon packing boxes for the Billings Food Bank to distribute to seniors and families.

"They give out about 1,800 a month," Anderson says. She says her team packed more than 250 in their first hour, and she was hoping to do even better than that over the subsequent three.

At the Salvation Army building, a group from Galusha, Higgins, and Galusha busied themselves painting. Amy Iverson, the group's leader, says it was great to be able to help out the non-profit. Anderson sees the volunteer project as a quick education on the work that non-profits are taking on every day.

"You know, there are needs out there, but you don't realize just how many needs and what the depths of the needs are until you come and you actually do it yourself."

More than 800 volunteers took part in the Day of Caring.
