Jennifer Moore's Breast Cancer Story

BILLINGS - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and KULR-8 has brought you stories of women who fought against the terrible disease throughout October. In the last part of our Breast Cancer series, we talked to a woman who, after surviving breast cancer, turned her attention to helping those who just received the terrible news.

Jennifer Moore, like many other women, got her first mammogram when she was 40 years old. It was also her last for three years.

"I went into college to get my surgical technology degree, and while I was in college, I didn't have time to do any checkups," said Moore.

Three years later, Moore found time for another checkup, and what the doctors found surprised Moore: she had an aggressive tumor in her left breast.

"Couldn't believe that this was happening because nothing showed up at 40," said Moore, "How could there possibly be a tumor in my breast now, at 43?"

Moore knew she had to act quickly, and eventually decided to remove her entire left breast. After surgery, however, doctors found the cancer had spread. Moore had a single lymph node that had microscopic traces of cancer. Moore immediately began chemo treatment, which, she said, did not come easy.

"I wasn't able to keep myself hydrated enough. I just seemed to have a tougher time with it," said Moore.

Moore got through her treatment, and is a breast cancer survivor. She now offers support and advice to women who are battling breast cancer.

"Breasts, it's not as horrific as it apparently seemed to be, because your mind does crazy things, you know, when you think about something that you don't know," said Sherri Steilen. KULR-8 also interviewed Steilen on her breast cancer battle.

Above all for Moore, however, she said she hopes other women will avoid the same mistake she made years ago.

"Get your mammograms at least once a year, ladies, at the age of 40 and above."
