BILLINGS - There is a new exercise in town that is hard for some people to wrap their minds around, but the owners of Pole Funaddictz say it is just a way to shape up and have fun.

"It's a workout like no other," said Kathy Letendre, who co-owns the business with her 24-year-old daughter.

"A lot of biceps, triceps, abdominals, quadriceps, and calves," said Eliza Cannell, instructor. "We do crunches and pushups, stretching and stuff and that's about 30 minutes of the class, and once they get on the pole they realize that they're using all their muscles."

There is no dancing around it; a pole fitness class is going to raise some eyebrows. Letendre counters though that it is just another way to tone up and involves no removal of clothing.

"Women nowadays are looking for a workout that's different," she said. "So, they come in here they're in a group with anywhere from two to six other people, the lights are dim, you've got the disco ball going, of course we have clothes on, and the music is playing and it's just a fun atmosphere."

Working the pole for exercise is not new to the national scene, but it is to Billings.

"We run into negative and positive reactions from people, but they just need to know that we're here for strictly fitness and fun," said Letendre.

It is an interesting career choice for the 47-year-old mother of two who is a grounds supervisor at a local nursing and retirement home.

"It started out as a joke at first," laughed Letendre. However, once she wrapped her brain around it, she thought it would be a fun form of supplemental income to help put her kids through college.

"Sometimes people still think I'm crazy, but now that they see that we're actually getting clientele they look at me totally different and say that they're glad I took the chance," she said.

Pole Funaddictz has turned people's perception of a workout upside down. An introductory class is 90 minutes and costs $20 dollars.
