BILLINGS - A new report gives Montana a grade of D for addressing the dental health needs of children
It is by the The PEW Center on the States.
The president of the American College of Dentists and Billings pediatric dentist for more than 30 years, Dr. Thomas Wickliff, said it is important good dental health habits are learned young.
He said the key is preventing decay.
He recommended parents brush and floss a child's teeth starting when they get their first tooth until they are ten years old.
"Thoroughness is always the thing to remember and getting right down to the gum line," said Dr. Wickliffe. "Children on their own really can't keep them clean, they're not thorough enough and according to all the research they're not until about age ten. So, I always recommend that up until age ten to have either mom or dad doing it, or both."
Doctor Wickliffe said if mom or dad can thoroughly brush and floss a child's teeth at least once a day that should be enough.
He also said juice is a major contributor to decay and should be limited to only during meal time.
