Sleep Apnea and Risk of Death

BILLINGS - Sleep apnea may increase the risk of dying especially among men.
A recent study released by John Hopkins University shows people suffering from severe sleep apnea, meaning you stop breathing at least 30 times in an hour, are at an increased risk of death.
Men between the ages of 40 and 70 have an even higher risk.
Doctor Rory Ramsey with the St. Vincent Healthcare Sleep Center said the study also points to a strong association between cardiac disease and sleep apnea.
"The signs of sleep apnea are things like snoring, stopping breathing at night and your spouse or partner can identify that, and tiredness or sleepiness during the day, those are the main things to look out for," said Dr. Ramsey.
Dr. Ramsey said losing weight or wearing a mask to help you breath better at night are some treatment options.
He said more studies are needed to determine if sleep apnea does indeed cause heart disease.
