BILLINGS- More than 50 Billings seniors celebrated the 16th annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day at Mission Ridge. Participants celebrated by taking part in golf, thera band exercises and aqua aerobics.

The all-day event is aimed at helping seniors stay active and helping them renew their commitment to living healthier lives through fitness. Retirement counselor Lisa Sorensen says it's extremely important for retirees to stay active. "The longer people stay moving and active and especially seniors, the longer they can live independently."

Marge Dawes participated in the days events. She tried playing golf for the first time in her life. Dawes says staying active is very important to her and has a huge impact on her overall health. "Your attitude in life is a lot better and I think its just healthier for you, you know it's just a real asset all the way around."

Retiree Gerri Frasch also participated in the celebration. She regularly attends the aqua aerobics class and says she has experienced first hand the benefits of staying active. Frasch suffers from severe arthritis in her hips and knees and says since joining the class, she's seen a big improvement. "I've been able to do a lot of things that I never been able to do in the last six and seven months."

The celebration at Mission Ridge was one of 1000 official celebrations held across the nation. An estimated 100,000 seniors celebrated the day nationally.
