Baby Sign Language

BILLINGS - Local parents are learning to communicate with their children, before their babies even reach their first birthday.

"Do you want more? Do you want more?" Heidi Grevious asks a one year old in her baby sign language workshop. And with baby sign language, the little girl could soon learn to tell her if she wants more or not. And the same goes for children as young as 6 months old.

"It's amazing to see what they want to tell you and what they can," said Grevious. Grevious taught her son and daughter to sign at a young age. "She had 45 to 50 words that she could sign. She would go to the window and tell me if there was dog outside, or we would be at dinner and she would say, banana please."

With repetition, Heidi says it's easy to teach your baby as many signs as you want. If you just want to start with the basics, she says the 3 main words are "more", "eat" and "milk."

Learning baby sign language comes with many benefits. You'll not only grow closer to your child by learning what they're thinking at a young age, they'll reap the benefits later in life. Research shows when children learn to sign as babies, it can increase their overall IQ by 12 points.
