BILLINGS - Many people struggle with their weight whether it’s being too thin or too heavy. Keeping track of everything you eat can be a good start to reaching your weight goals.

Dr. Kathleen Baskett, Director of St. Vincent Healthcare Weight Management Clinic, says keeping a log of all food and beverages consumed each day can help determine why a person is over -or- underweight. She says knowing your daily calorie intake can help you decide where to make changes.

Although no specific foods are off limits, being honest with yourself about what you eat is key.

“We like to say that there isn't any one bad food all food is fair game. If you know where you need to be calorie wise to bring about weight loss or weight gain, then your goal is to stay within your calorie budget for the day.”

Many books are available showing calorie values based on portions, pieces, and weight. As for the log itself, you can use specific journals, a notebook or even just a plain old piece of paper.
