Bye, Bye Balance Problems

BILLINGS - Whether it's an inner ear issue, knee problems or you're just plain dizzy, poor balance is something you don't have to live with. However, doctors say many people let their balance problems go untreated because they think there's no cure. Physical therapist, Carol Engle with Saint Vincent Healthcare, says stability can improve through exercise.

A new machine at St. Vincent's, called the Smart Equitest Balance Master, can help. "We really challenge the sensory system the body uses which includes vision, inner ear and the sensory system, including the feet, muscles and joints in the legs to challenge the those systems to help us improve balance," says Engle.

The balance master has different components, such as a floor move that can move beneath the patient and a wall that can tip forward, making the patient focus in order to keep their balance. The machine is used for assessment and rehabilitation.
