Violinist Playing Again

BILLINGS - There is nothing funny about a broken humerus, especially when you are the first violin for the Billings Symphony.
Lisa Lombardy, 55, is a Billings Clinic Nurse, and a violinist with the Billings Symphony.
Decades of training allow her body and mind to work effortlessly together creating beautiful string music.
But, last February she hit a sour note.
Lombardy was skiing at Red Lodge Mountain on a brand new pair of skis. It was her first time on the slopes in 13 years.
"I was doing stem christies, quick ones, which I don't think you're supposed to do on parabolics and I must have caught an edge and it popped me up and back down and it happened so fast," recalled Lombardy. "When I came up for air I think okay I'm good, and then all of a sudden my arm it was hanging."
Lombardy suffered a spiral fracture to the humerus and a fracture to the wrist on the left arm.
"You can crash and burn hard, we all can," she said.
Lombardy said the the injury was humbling. After undergoing surgery to have plates and bolts put in to hold her broken bones together, she spent four months in daily physical therapy sessions to regain the dexterity necessary to play the violin.
"My goal was that I would be golfing by the end of June, and I would be playing the first concert in the symphony in September, and I did both of those," smiled Lombardy.
She said her recovery is music to her ears, and that fateful day on the slopes last February was not the finale of her skiing career.
"I've decided that i'm going to go back and ski, however, I am going to take a parabolic lesson," laughed Lombardy.
She said she still has some limitation in her shoulder rotation.
