Alzheimer's Study

By Katie Ussin

BILLINGS - Billings Clinic Research Center is recruiting participants for an international clinical study to learn if an investigational drug can help control the progression of Alzheimer's Disease.
Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive loss of memory and cognitive function.
With 18-million people affected worldwide, studies are necessary to hopefully one day find a cure for this life-stealing disease.
More than 2,000 research centers across North America are participating in this study.
Volunteers must be between 50 and 88 years old, have a diagnosis of mild to moderate Alzheimer's, and have a caregiver also willing to participate in the study.
They are also looking for people with a certain gene which volunteers will be screened for.
Once approved, the trial will last a little more than two years.
"They're thinking that if we can get a drug that decreases the amyloid plaque maybe we can hold on to the memory that they have and that will stop the progression of Alzheimer's dementia," said Dr. Larry Severa. "So, it's a remarkable study."
