Bee Stings More Likely

By Stephanie Domurat

BILLINGS - It is the time of year again, when you may notice more bees buzzing around. But beyond just an annoyance, these flying insects can cause some major harm to your health. Allergists at Billings Clinic say they've seen an increased number of patient concerns this year because more bees are swarming around than usual. They say most of the bees this year are Yellowjackets, and unlike honeybees, they are aggressive and can sting multiple times. An estimated ten to fifteen percent of people are allergic, and for about one percent, the reaction can be deadly. For those with allergies, doctors recommend carrying an epinephrine pen with them at all times to provide immediate relief. Allergist Kathleen Davis says everyone will see some sort of swelling, but if the reaction spreads further than two joints from the sting, you should see a doctor. "If you get stung and your allergic, instead of having a local reaction, they're whole body can swell, they're throat can swell up, they can faint, they can have asthma symptoms, and that can be from just one sting," says Dr. Davis, Allergist at Billings Clinic. She says yellowjackets are carnivorous, which means you may see them more around picnics and food. To avoid being stung, don't wear brightly colored clothing or floral perfumes. And for those with severe allergies, Davis says regular immunizations work the best.
