HARLOWTON - Montana's rich history contains volumes of information relating to the state's natural beauty and the people who call it home.

The central Montana town of Harlowton holds one distinction that no other city in the world can claim. Harlowton holds a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. "The only golf course that completely surrounds a cemetery. There are cemetery's bordering or next to some golf courses, but the Guinness Book of World Records states that we're the only one that completely encompasses the cemetery," said Jawbone Country Club Manager Ron Fischer.

The course started to take shape in the early thirties, with pasture fairways and sand greens, but thanks to a grant and hard work the course gets better with each passing year. Fischer said the cemetery is the burial ground for early settlers and Chinese immigrants who came over to work on the railroad. The elements have left these burial grounds weathered and worn by flood, heat and snow, but a grounds-keeper took it upon himself to clean up the overgrown grass and build a fence to mark the spot.

One traveling golfer made it a stop on his goal; to hit every public course in Montana. "It’s fun, it's a challenging course, and it’s got some interesting holes. I'm looking forward to going over to the cemetery," said Larry Kirkpatrick.

Fischer says the Jawbone Country Club brings people together and the course's unique past only makes it more interesting. "Its really gratifying to see the young people playing. To me, the real deal is when I see families out there. You know; husband, wife and kids out there golfing and enjoying the outdoors."

So the next time you're able to stop by this great Montana town, don't forget a trip to one of the Guinness Book of World Record's landmarks.
