BILLINGS - As the year draws to a close many people are setting new goals for the New Year.

According to the American Heart Association about 20 percent of the American population smokes.

"It's a major health hazard," said Billings Clinic pulmonary therapist Christine Standish. "It's a big factor towards heart disease and lung cancer." This time of year many people try to kick the habit. Standish said only about 25%-to-50% of the people who try to quit smoking are successful, but the numbers increase with a little help.

"When nicotine replacement is used it doubles the odds," Standish said. "It eases the odds."

She also recommends patients avoid situations and people who trigger smoking. One of the first steps involves the calendar. "It's important to set a quit date so you have something to work toward," she said.

Even with these tips Standish said many people can't put the lights out. Patients who are struggling sometimes seek alternative methods like hypnotist Connie Kvilhaug.

"About the first week of January the phone starts really picking up," Kvilhaug said. "A lot of the people what tries patches, gums, drugs, they're at the point they know they can do it, they just need help."

Kvilhaug said she helps people relax to the point they rewire their minds and no longer crave cigarettes.

"Just like you'd take a detour if the road were closed, you get used to taking that detour," she said. "So you're learning a new way."

Both Stanish and Kvilhaug said the biggest step in quitting is making a commitment and sticking to it. Montana also has a tobacco quit line to help people kick the habit. Dial 1-800-QUIT-NOW for more information.
