BILLINGS - As engineering pioneers move forward in eco-friendly building, people's curiosity rises. People want to know more about it and for many the journey to a greener home begins at their local home improvement store. Most of the tools you need are there, whether it's a small project, a new addition or that dream home.

There are great ways to reduce environmental impact, save resources and promote a healthy lifestyle for your family. The options can be overwhelming, but a few simple selections can help combat high-energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.

Energy-efficient materials may cost more initially, but will save you money in the long run, for features such as windows and faucets. A dual-action toilet can run $60 dollars more, but you can make up that cost in less than a year in water savings alone.

Choosing recycled or renewable flooring like bamboo is a better alternative because it is durable and water resistant. Bamboo matures in roughly half the time it takes hardwoods to grow. They can also be easier on your legs.

High-efficiency water heaters and windows, low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators are other features that save money are better for the environment.
