Securing Our Schools

BILLINGS - Passing along knowledge is the mission for any school system. However, over the years, keeping our children safe has also become a priority, but some schools in School District Two aren't making the grade.

KULR-8 found 3 schools not only failing, but getting an incomplete on campus security. School District Two Officials take student safety very seriously to avoid situations like what happened 10 years ago at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. "It can happen. For anybody to say it won't and it can't you're just fooling yourself," said Billings Senior High Schools Student Resource Officer Dan Brown.

District officials take different precautions at different schools. All middle schools and high schools in the district operate as more of an open campus meaning most doors are unlocked and all visitors must check in at the main office but at the elementary schools the administrative practice is to keep all doors locked except the main entrance.

"We register everybody we have that comes to the desk which is usually right inside the front entrance and we stop them there. They don't proceed any further without a badge on of some kind," said School District Two Superintendent Jack Copps.

KULR-8 wanted to see how each school responded to an unannounced visitor so over a 2-day period we went to 11 different schools, walked inside, and waited to see how long it took an administrator to notice our KULR-8 employee was there.

Of the 11 schools, 8 stopped us less than 30 seconds after walking inside. But 3 others, one high school, one middle school and one elementary failed our test and that now has administrators asking questions and looking into security procedures.
