Don't Do it Yourself Series

By Madelyn Jarrett

BILLINGS - With springtime finally here, many homeowners may think it's a great time to get repairs done around the house. And while "Do it Yourself" has an economical ring to it, you may not always be better off.

Professionals in the home repair industry say there are many projects you can do yourself, but others should be left to the experts. Paul Ferguson, the owner of House to Home Home Repairs says if you do start on a project and get in over your head, it's going to be more pricey.

"Then you've got to do the demolition of what they did plus doing it the right way. It takes twice as long to demolition something they did wrong." Says Ferguson. He says equipment and experience wise, there's a lot more to "doing it yourself" than most think. "If you live in a county, there's very little permits you need. You just need an electrical permit. If you live in the city or within a mile of the city, you need a lot of permits, depending on what you do. Something like this, you need a framing permit, and flooring permit, electrical permit, plumbing."

Healthcare workers say sometimes the cost of doing it yourself can be a physical toll. Brad VonBergen, a nurse and Trauma Program Coordinator at Billings Clinic says, "With the price of things going up people want to do things themselves and save money. But getting on a roof and not having experience, not securing yourself and we're seeing a lot of falls."

Working with unfamiliar tools or rental equipment can be very dangerous. "We see people that shoot themselves in the hand with a nail gun, they'll come in with a staple or nail from a gun, and that's the right thing to do, come in here. Depending on where if goes in it can cause nerve, vein or arterial damage."

So as tempting as saving a buck and getting the job done yourself may sound, just think it through first. Ferguson also says if you are doing something yourself, always have someone else there in case something goes wrong. Make sure you don't put yourself or family at risk.
