Opening Ceremonies

By Stephanie Domurat

BILLINGS - Opening ceremonies were held Friday morning for the regional Special Olympics. How does an athlete prepare for the games?

She may not look like a power lifter, but don't be fooled. "I can dead-lift 215lbs and I can bench 95 pounds." Twenty-seven year old Vivienne Shockley started playing sports a dozen years ago. Her current favorite, power lifting.

"I love it, cuz I like to get strong", says Vivienne.

She showed off that strength during her shotput event at the area Special Olympics. The Yellowstone Valley area athletes, as young as 8, came to Billings to compete in track and field, shot put, long jump, and cycling events. The torch was lit to commence the event, and continued to glow with inspiration and hope to those involved.

Sheryl Shockley, says, "Its not just the torch to them it's the flame of hope and that's what it is Special Olympics gives them hope because with their athletic competition it is training for life"

Most athletes begin training 8 weeks before their event, but Vivienne doesn't stop there, she trains all year long and likes to keep her body healthy.

Vivienne says, "I’m trying to cut out pop cuz it makes my bones softer,"

Vivienne's mother believes the athletes also learn valuable lessons saying, "It teaches team work it teaches perseverance, and that translates into everything they do says Sheryl." The regional games ran through Saturday. The finalists will go on to compete at the state games in Great Falls next month.

Good luck Vivienne!
