Teen Pregnancy Series

By Katie Ussin

BILLINGS - Teen pregnancy, growing up too fast. "I'm Hailey and this is my daughter, her name's Chloe and she's six months and I'm 17," said one Laurel High School student.

According to the latest data from the CDC's National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the national teen birth rate went up 3% in 2006. "I'm Oceana and I'm 31 weeks pregnant, and I'm 18," said another teen at Young Families and Early Head Start in Billings.

Montana's rose 9%, marking the biggest increase in the state since 1990. "Homework and stuff is kind of hard to do but, you make it happen," said Katy Hannah, 17. Is the rise due to a more sexually explicit pop culture, or what kids are or are not learning at home or in school?

"A lot of peer pressure," said Cody Hartman, 17. "Everybody's doing it so you think you gotta be cool and do it."

"You're not going to be like, 'Oh, wait, mom said don't,' you're going to be in the heat of the moment and you're going to be more impulsive," said Jennifer McCoy, 18.

Monica Anderson is a family development specialist at Young Families in Billings; a program that provides parenting classes to area teens. She has worked there for 7 years. "When I first started here most of our girls were 16, 17, 18 years old, said Anderson. "Now, the trend seems to be freshmen, sophomores, 14 and 15."

High school graduation is up next for the teens who we talked to for this piece, and all plan to continue their education. They said their goal is to support themselves and their children.

While the latest data for the teen birth rate is available, comparable data on teen sexual activity, contraceptive use, pregnancy and abortion are not yet available.
