Dumb Laws Series

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - You might have seen them online, strange laws across the county. Some are very hard to believe, but are they true? A website online posts laws they claim states across the country have passed and as I found out Montana has approved some pretty strange laws.

Montana has thousands of laws on the books. Everyone's aware of speeding and seatbelt laws but a website pokes fun at laws Montana has passed throughout the years that don't make too much sense. The site, crazylaws.com, claims it's illegal for married Montana women to go fishing alone on Sundays and illegal for unmarried women to fish alone at all.

In Montana, it's also a felony for a wife to open her husband's mail. But don't expect to go to jail for these, experts say these laws are very outdated. "Most of these laws were written probably a long time ago," said Laurel Police Chief Rick Musson. "I think they were passed well over a century ago when we were a lot more paternalistic and patriarchal in this society. More male dominance and women simply didn't have the rights," said MSU-Billing's Dr. Keith Edgerton.

Yellowstone County Sheriff's Officials say they've never even heard of any law about women and fishing restrictions. "Sounds like a fish and game problem. I don't think we're going to arrest women for fishing," said Yellowstone County Sheriff Department's Ron Wilson.

One postal official calls the law about a wife not being able to open her husbands mail rubbish. She says federal law states otherwise. "The federal law is that no party can control the mail of another party. In the case of a marriage situation a husband or a wife can not control the mail over the object of the other," said Postal Official Lisa Blomquist.

The moral of the story, if you don't want to be in the dog house don't tell a woman she can't fish and if you don't want to go to jail don't mess with other people's mail.

A law is a law untill it is not.Why can the police choose what laws they can inforce and what they can,t when they take an oath its to inforce all laws, its up to the state and federal goverment to either change or get raid of these silly laws, untill then no matter how old or seemingly senseless a law is, it is a law, and we are to abide by these laws. Imagine if a crimenal can pick and choose what laws he can live by and what he can be charged with, you think the county is messed up now.
