Ski Tips Series

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - Looking to pick up some quick advice before you jump into your skis and hit the mountain full force? Knowing what to wear and what not to is crucial before heading to the mountain. Luckily, the staff at Alpine High give some tips any skier can use before taking on the slopes.

The Crew at Alpine High says boots are absolutely the most important thing. "If your feet aren't happy you're not happy. It doesn't matter how good your ski is, if your feet are cold, they hurt, your boots are too big or to small skiing is no fun," said Alpine Highs Tim Hedin.

"One thing if you are having trouble slipping into your boots I know a lot of people do, people pull the tongue straight out, pull it to the side. Another big mistake people wear two pairs of socks. I'd say nothing thicker than dress socks," said Hedin.

Staff members say if you're looking for clothes it's what you like and they say helmets are huge. "About ten years ago helmets started to come into play 10% to 20% of people were wearing them now 80% to 90% of people are wearing them," said Hedin.

As far as skis Alpine High doesn't carry the beginner ski because they say they feel for the price that you're not going to outgrow for two or three seasons. Instead of a ski at the end of your 8-week lessons you are already outgrowing. And poles Hedin says the thing with poles you can say you want a pole for $20 or another pole for $130 bucks. "As much as we like to sell $120 poles as a beginner. I'd say you're crazy just go with $20 dollar poles," said Hedin.

During the next few months, KULR-8 will bring you easy tips from a professional ski instructor so you can improve the next time you head down the mountain.
