Event Description

The Billings Symphony’s 59th season, under the baton of Harrigan, opens on Sept. 19, 2009 with “Opening Night with Alisa Weilerstein.” The dramatic cellist Alisa Weilerstein is back by popular demand! She performs Bloch’s hauntingly beautiful Schelomo, known for its richness of passion and poignant spirituality.

“Alisa Weilerstein possesses a sterling technique, one that allows her to live dangerously, with wide extremes of tempos and dynamics,” says the Miami Herald. “Her openly emotional playing is reflected in her Yo-Yo Ma-like stage presence, —eyes closed, swaying to the music—her playing is not indulgent or self-communing.... She affectingly brought out the deep vein of sadness and melancholy in this music.”

Weilerstein performed the Season Finale in the Billings Symphony’s 2007-2008 Season with an awe-inspiring performance of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1. Gazette Reporter Jaci Webb said “audience members close enough to the stage watched in awe to see the layers of hairs that tore off her bow as Weilerstein alternately attacked and caressed her cello through a stunning performance. It wasn't so much that she connected with her instrument, but that Weilerstein became that instrument in the expressive piece.”

Also performed Opening Night is Rossini’s Overture to The Thieving Magpie, which is heard in Stanley Kubrick’s cult classic film “A Clockwork Orange” and has provided the background score for many television and radio commercials. The evening ends with Rachmaninoff’s colorful Symphony No. 2 that alternates between stormy conflict and serene vision.
