Worland man shares warning after being partially blinded by eclipse 50 years ago

Gard Ferguson wants to warn everyone: it can happen to you, and it can happen to your children. Ferguson is a Worland EMT and ambulance volunteer. He suffered permanent partial blindness when he glanced at an eclipse in the early 60s. Ferguson's optometrist Carl Cottrell says his condition is called Solar Maculopathy. The effect is similar to macular degeneration. The UV rays can burn the retina and cause cells to never grow back.

New data from the Centers for Disease Control shows 85% of teens admit to at least one habit that increases the chance of a serious eye infection. Nearly half of surveyed teens did not see an eye doctor at least once a year and about a third admitted to sleeping while wearing contacts. Another common offense - failing to remove lenses while swimming or showering, which can carry germs from the water into the eye.
