As a child, Gillette Vaira of Lambert, Montana, began her path to broadcasting by using flashlights as microphones to practice her news delivery skills. She took reporting to a different level when she interned at KULR-8 while attending MSU-Billings, graduating in 2009 with a B.A. in Mass Communication and a minor in International Studies. She obtained her M.A. in broadcast journalism from the University of Montana in 2011. While working on her thesis project, “One Long Route,” she uncovered discrepancies by investigating one of Montana’s longest school bus routes. The series of stories aired throughout Montana on NBC affiliate stations.

Gillette won an Emmy Award through the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Northwest College Awards competition. She also took second place in the national Broadcast Education Association anchoring competition, and she has won various regional Society of Professional Journalists awards in radio and television. Gillette interned as a multimedia reporter in southern France, and she has reported for Montana Public Radio and National Native News. She helped produce the University of Montana film, Cannabusiness, in addition to anchoring and supervising MontanaPBS Newsbrief.

Gillette is a fourth generation college-educated woman and Montanan. She is excited to have the opportunity to report in her home state.
